Fredrica is currently a brown belt in Brazilian jiujitsu. A longtime advocate for women in combat sports, Fredrica believes that jiujitsu is uniquely transformative for women, helping them build autonomy, resilience, and bonds of trust with one another.
She began training in combat sports in 2001 while living in New York City. As a law student looking for a distraction, she dropped into a muay thai class. The coach, Ajarn Phil Nurse, soon encouraged her to step into the ring as an amateur fighter and Fredrica fell in love with the rush of competition. Phil was a trailblazer in recognizing the potential of women in combat sports and he respected female athletes as serious competitors long before women appeared in the UFC. It was in this setting that Fredrica first saw how quickly skill can develop when a strong group of women train together with a shared purpose.
After being forced to retire from striking sports due to an eye injury, Fredrica discovered jiujitsu in 2014. She was captivated by the sport’s unique blend of physicality and strategy. While living in Michigan, Fredrica taught women's jiujitsu classes, organized open mats for women, and regularly cross-trained at other gyms. She was also part of the movement that pushed the IBJJF to offer equal competition opportunities for male and female masters athletes.
Fredrica currently trains with Gee and April at Vien Jiu-Jitsu, where she appreciates their high-skill, detail-oriented approach to training. She believes their methodology offers something valuable for practitioners of all levels and continues to evolve her own practice.
As a coach, Fredrica is dedicated to creating a positive training environment. She especially enjoys working with women who are just beginning their jiujitsu journey, helping them gain confidence and skill in the company of other women. While she is mostly retired from the competition scene, she’s passionate about helping others prepare for the excitement and growth that comes with stepping onto the tournament mats. Outside of jiujitsu, Fredrica is a working artist and a mother of two teenagers; she loves spending time outdoors with her family, whether hiking, paddling, hunting, fishing, or camping.
